New rules governing the amount of notice required for rent increases will take effect today.

The changes provide relief to renters by doubling the amount of notice needed for rent increases to month-to-month leases.

Fixed-term leases will require any increase to be included in the lease document.

The amendments were passed in the fall sitting of the Legislature and are in response to a recommendation from the Merriman-Pringle report of the Task Force on Housing Affordability, delivered in June of this year.

You know I posted a add on another website about how much rent is out of control and it would be nice to have the idea of rent control again. I received many e-mails back tell me to stop crying and suck it up it is my fault that I can not afford rent. I had people even telling me to go back to school, guess what I did three years ago and it is just as hard to pay the bills then as it is now. Maybe is is time to think about moving out of Saskatchewan I hate to do it but my kids need to eat and have a roof over their heads and I can no longer do it.

rent increase
written by a guest , December 13, 2008

I have been living in my place of residence for almost 14 years. My rent is going up $200 in three months, the lanlord won't fix or repair things that have needed to be for years therefore i don't qualify for the rent supplement.

Renters need to try & fill the landlords shoes and pay the heavy utility and repair costs caused by
irresponsible tenants who choose not to close windows and doors in winter and seem to enjoy wrecking property.
The power, water and gas cost increases in this province need to be automatically passed unto the tenant, they are the ones wasting the utilities.

what we need is a decrease in rent.....never mind doubling the time for notice in increasing rent. I cannot beleive the rent amounts on many properties in this city.....many have difficult times making ends meet let alone living in unsafe and unkempt accomodations.

big deal

How can they say this is a relief for renters? So now they have 6 months to find another place that they still can't afford.Someone needs to put a cap on how much and how often rent can be increased. How can landlords justify the ridiculous increases. They're not putting much money into fixing up some of these rental properties. As far as I'm concerned they're just being greedy. If we're headed for a recession, where does that leave those that are finding it hard to pay the outrageous rent already.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Why doesn't Saskatchewan have rent control like some other provinces? Pretty soon it will be too expensive to rent if it continues to go up and up and up.

Question I have is -- where is your source from as I could not find any information confirming this on any government site or in talking to the Saskatoon Rentalsmen so if you could give me some sort guide to where I can find concrete proof of this it would greatly help.
