Southern Saskatchewan has the potential for an above average spring runoff . . . with the rest of the province at normal to below normal levels. The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority is projecting well above normal runoff in the Maple Creek, Val Marie and Assinaboia regions. The above normal area includes Estevan, Weyburn, Moosomin, Regina and Swift Current. The Watershed Authority will be watching two communities . . . Gravelbourg and Eastend. Spokesman Doug Johnson says there is significant snow in the upstream basin and if it melts quickly, there is some potential for flooding. Centers such as Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Melfort, Nipawin, Spiritwood, Meadow Lake and a large portion of Northern Saskatchewan can expect a below normal runoff. Snowpack accumulations in the mountains are currently below normal. Unless there is above normal spring precipitation, flows into Lake Diefenbaker are expected to be below normal. Flows on the North Saskatchewan River are projected to be below normal during the summer. The provincial runoff forecast is based on soil moisture conditions at freeze-up and snowpack accumulations at the end of February.
