No Snow Removal Answers Yet

People looking for answers from the city regarding snow removal will have to wait until next week.

Snow removal was a hot topic facing city councillors heading into their meeting last night, with over 30 letters written from residents on the issue.

However, the issue was deferred to next week's executive council meeting. Council decided they wanted more time to analyze what happened, and receive a report from administration before diving into a discussion.

Councillor Bob Pringle says they don't know if it was a problem of money or priorities, but by next week they hope to have more answers. The city budgeted 5.5 million dollars for snow removal last year, but spent 6.5 million.

It amazes me on how one storm can bring out the worst in people. It takes time for the graders to get the job done, but everyone figures they should have there road done right now before anyone else. i know the snow removal program needs to be looked at, but i believe it is not mayor or councils falut it don't work. You can spend all the money you want but if graders plow trucks are not managed properly it just don't work. The city needs to take a better look on how to outfit the all the trucks better with detachable plows for sanding trucks, garbage trucks etc, and have better availabiliy to graders. I do do plow roads and know what operators deal with and it is not easy. I just hope the storm is a learning experience and learn from the mistakes made and fix them.

PR,

Next time we vote we should also rember that we need more intellegent people running for mayor & not just some joe blow running just for the sake of having his/her name in for publicity.
Look at what our choices were last election.

The recent blizzard was really the first time this year that any snow clearing was required so I don't know how the city can be complaining about budget. And I agree with the comment on the Victoria Bridge lights-another scandal. But maybe those who voted the mayor in again will have something to remember when the next election comes around and use their heads next time.

Simple solution - designate one side of the street as no parking on one day and the other side on another day, that way the streets could be cleaned with no problem on one side and then on the other side the next day. Each area would have a schedule like the garbage schedule. It would not be hard to move your vehicle across the street on a certain day of the week. Then the city would have to make sure they got their equipment working on the right side on the right day.Problem solved!

Quick comment for Leo,
Most of us with a brain understand it's not the operators that are the problem and you are correct in regards to the doorknobs that leave their cars and trucks etc out on the street and complain that the street isn't cleaned. But with that said it's you guys that are in the position to deal with people like that.
When I bladed roads in Edmonton, St Albert and Calgary we very simply buried the idiots cars...
Problem solved and 9 time out of 10 they learn the lesson.

Here's a solution people..
Remember this when it comes time to re elect.
I didn't vote for the current Mayor or the councillor we got stuck with, and for those of you that did, well I guess you reap what you sow....

We didnt get our grant from the provicial govt this year but yet there is money for the third ave streetcape ?
Fees for everything are increasing every year but yet there is no money for snow removal or more equipment ?
Taxes are are increased eevery year but yet there is no money to repair our roadways or other needed projects ?
I can t speak for others but I think there is something seriously wrong with this picture.

Put more private contractors out and it will save alot of overtime for the city. That is what Winnipeg does for those talking about that cities efficient snow clearing.

My car nearly falls apart everytime I go over the ruts on Dufferin, I have to go extremely slow, and then I get stuck in them. Is the city gonna pay when I do lose some parts? Don't think so...

you people that are complaining about snow removal maybe you should see if you can ride in anyone of those machines and see if you can do better its not fun out there with all you people driving on streets making it harder for the equipment , now can you tell me where do you put snow on residential streets with all your cars parked there it is nice to talk but let see you do it and see what it is like

Ya, there should be a little more money for snow removal but it would also be nice if the city spent a little money on salting the roads.
In the last week I have almost been hit by two vehicles and almost hit a vehicle because of the slippery roads. We drive slow in these conditions but still if there is no dirt or salt down a person is going to slide.
Maybe the mayor should come and check out 15th, 14th and Albert Ave. The corner of 12th street is ridiculous. We should put money into the roads and no the mayors lights on the Victoria Bridge and having fireworks every year at the bridge. You could use the million or you are using on that to salt and sand the roads.
