Landfill Fees to Stay Put For Now

A proposed fee hike at the city's landfill was deferred at city council last night, as some councillors want to explore other options first.

The increase was suggested to cover landfill costs, and to encourage more recycling. Councillor Bob Pringle says they should work more closely recycling organisations that divert materials from the landfill, like Habitat for Humanity.

The proposal will go back to executive committee next week.

Also decided at council last night, traffic on 3rd Avenue will be opened up a little bit.

The meridian on 3rd Avenue blocking 21st street will be taken out, to make room for left turn bays. The city says the intersection will become more like the one on 4th Avenue and 21st, with traffic signals and crosswalks.

The issue was deferred from last council meeting because some councillors felt there wasn't enough information on traffic and pedestrian safety. A city report says traffic numbers are slightly less than similar intersections, and there haven't been any pedestrian collisions in the past 5 years.

Removal of the meridian is part of the city's project to redo 3rd Avenue.

Alan, you can recycle milk jugs/cartons at any Sarcan recycling depot and the Cosmopolitan Industries cardboard recycling bins can be found at a few locations around the city. We always take ours to the Lakewood Civic Centre, for example. For more info, you can go to http://www.saskatoon.ca. I hope this helps make life a bit easier for you.

I am new here from Alberta. Make recycling easier. I have to drive out of my way to get to paper recycling only. No plastic or Milk bottles. I have not found any that are covenant, when I first arrived in Saskatoon, I drove around looking for places for cardboard, gave up put in the garbage. Right now I have plastic/ Milk bottles without expending effort, time and cost I am just going to have to put in the garbage. Don’t like that, I am a great believer in recycling. Perhaps like Alberta put a deposit on milk bottles.
