Not only does Saskatchewan lack a plan to tackle child poverty, but the entire country does too.
It was back in 1989 that an all party resolution was passed to end child poverty in Canada by the year 2000.
And there's not much improvement, with Saskatchewan still having the 4th highest child poverty in the country.
Saskatoon Pediatrician, Dr. Susanna Martin says poverty has many health implications and studies have shown that it raises the risk of chronic illnesses.
Besides addressing poverty, a report, done by the Paediatric Society also suggested there are several areas where the province could introduce legislation to better protect children.
Martin says that includes laws to ensure children and youth wear helmets when riding ATV's, even if it's on private land, this province should have bicycle helmet laws and a law to ensure booster seats are used to secure children inside vehicles.
She says it is the pediatricians who see the fallout from a lack of laws that would protect children. (sv dec 9-09)
