One of the few bright spots in agriculture these days is the lentil
market.
Prices have jumped 10 cents a pound since late October. Number one large
green lentils are selling for 37 cents a pound. Red lentils are sitting at 35
cents for December delivery.
Toby Torkelson with Rayglen Commodities says processing plants are running at
100 per cent capacity and well booked forward.
The higher prices are being powered by significant demand from India. Jeff
Jackson is in Sales and Marketing for Wigmore Farms. He says the monsoon season
has been less than spectacular . . . with moisture levels down about 20 per
cent. India has started a tendering program and Jackson says "Canada is the
only destination with green lentils for the world to come to."
