As of this Wednesday everyone can get the H1N1 flu shot.
And the Deputy Medical Health Officer urges residents in the Saskatoon Health Region to get immunized. Dr. Johnmark Opondo says there is the possibility that some people may think the worst is over, but he doesn't believe that is the case.
Dr. Opondo says what we really need to look at is the Health Region's overall coverage rate with vaccine, and to keep in mind, as an individual, that it's important to protect yourself.
Opondo says he believes we're seeing a bit of an abatement of influenza-like activity. However, he says there is both a good and a bad news side to the story. He says in terms of hospitalizations they are seeing an increased number of in-hospital cases.
Immunizations of at-risk groups and students in Grades 7 to 12 continue today in the Saskatoon Health Region. Only those groups will be immunized and the new hours at Prairieland Park are from 1 till 8 pm.
Prairieland Park is closed tomorrow (tues) as the clinic is moved into Hall D in preparation for general public immunizations which begin on Wednesday.
As well, the Saskatoon Health Region's Manager of Disease Control says they will be at the University of Saskatchewan, which has a significant population, on Wednesday and Thursday. Karen Grauer points out that should reduce the lines and waiting period at Prairieland Park. Thursday, there's a clinic in Rosthern, and Friday in Watrous.
Grauer reminds the public that vaccinations will be available at clinic locations until at least mid-December, and there will be enough vaccine for anyone who wants to be immunized. (vmf rewrite Nov 23/09)
