Hybrid vehicles use high voltage batteries and electric motors to achieve their fuel economy gains.
In fact the battery packs hold up to 5 hundred volts and that can pose a significant danger for anyone who comes into contact with the battery, wiring or power train components.
Now, unions representing public auto insurance workers, including those in Saskatchewan, are calling for industry wide standards for anyone who works on these hybrid vehicles.
Government unions in Manitoba and their employer have recently adopted specific safety procedures for those who work with hybrid vehicles.
And, that union will now be working with the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union to push for safety procedures and basic training in their own workplace.
