Government Meets With Disability Groups PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 07 August 2008

Saskatchewan's Social Service Minister says eliminating the Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues hasn't left people with disabilities behind in the governments policy decisions.

Donna Harpauer says on the contrary she's been meeting face to face with the nearly 170 disability advocacy groups to hear first hand what they would like to have happen.

Harpauer says she's had a positive response to the meetings with most indicating they've never been able to meet face to face with the Minister in the past.

She says the meetings will continue and information will be gathered by her staff and reviewed before deciding whether its necessary to create something new. Harpauer says many groups have told her they felt the Council was a bureaucratic buffer they could do without. The NDP's Social Service Critic David Forbes said at the time the council was disbanded that the Sask Party government had taken what amounted to two steps back when it can to dealing with people with disabilities.
