The South Saskatchewan River and the Saskatchewan River are being nominated as a candidate Canadian Heritage River. The single nomination includes the entire one thousand and 52 kilometer section of the two rivers. Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent says the nomination is a testament to the hard work of the Metis, First Nations, and provincial and federal governments working together to celebrate and conserve Canada's river heritage. Saskatchewan Tourism Minister Bill Hutchinson says receiving this designation would ensure the importance of these rivers is preserved, putting in place a plan for protecting their unique qualities and cultural history .
