The push continues to try and find an airline willing to fly between Saskatoon and destinations in Europe. Executive director of Tourism Saskatoon, Todd Brandt, says the most interest they've had so far is from Iceland Air. While it makes some sense -- he says a flight to the U-K or Germany via Iceland is quicker than making a stop in Halifax or Toronto -- those flights would still entail a stopover, so it isn't exactly what they're after. Much of the demand for regular direct flights comes from the business sector, and Brandt says that does make attracting new airlines easier, as business travellers tend to spend more money and travel more often. As for the ongoing expansion project at the airport in Saskatoon -- Brandt says it will make things easier, but it isn't required as part of the push to find a new Europe-bound airline.
