In golf, where Prince Albert's Cory Selander is the new Provincial Junior Men's Champion. The SGI Canada Saskatchewan Provincial Championships wrapped up at the Legends in Warman late yesterday afternoon, in torrid weather conditions that included 70 kilometre per hour wind gusts. Selander fired a 1-under par 71 on day 2 to hold the lead heading into yesterday's round, only to fire a whopping 17-over yesterday. But the weather conditions were just that bad, and it was enough. Selander discusses the windy conditions, "It could move your ball so much. It was different than anything I'd ever seen before. For example, on one hole I hit a 6-iron into the wind 75 yards. As soon as I hit it, the wind just grabbed it and my ball was gone. Every hole, you had to play the wind because you couldn't keep your ball out of it for very long." Nipping at his heels were Justin Wood of Unity and Moose Jaw's Leighton Bearchell, tied at just 1 stroke back, for 2nd. The trio will represent Saskatchewan at the Canadian Junior Boys Championships in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia at the end of the month. On the junior women's side, 3 year old Brooke Hopson fired an 88 to hang on to the top spot yesterday. Prince Albert product Kayla Sawchuk and Regina's Lisa Reid were second and third respectively.
