Behind the Stripes is brought to you by the Saskatchewan Amateur Football Officials Association.  We are half way through the high school season and there is still plenty of opportunity to join the ranks --- go to www.bearef.ca to find out how you can get on the field as an official.

When it makes the highlight reels is when fans start to ask “can a player really be tackled by the hair without penalty?”  The answer is yes.  Tom Higgins the Director of Officiating in the CFL says the hair is considered part of the uniform or player.  Higgins says “it’s like tackling a guy by the arm.”  It made the highlight reels when Montreal’s Trent Guy was tackled by the hair in a game against the Argos.  A flag was thrown on the play but picked up after some discussion among the officials.  The decision was correct to pick up the flag.  Imagine if it was illegal to tackle a player by the hair, you could expect guys to have hair down to their waist by next season.  By the way Guy says it wasn’t the first time he’s been tackled by the hair and he has no intention of getting it cut.  He says he’s kind of used to it now but is now pinning it back so opponents don’t have as much to grab.
